I’m often asked by customers what they can do to take better care of their carpets. The answer is really very simple and that is to vacuum.
Most people are busy and don’t find time to vacuum as often as they should. There is a lot of fine dust and dirt that builds up in carpet and if it’s not regularly vacuumed out it can and will damage the carpet fibers. The majority of carpets these days are made of plastic and the fine dirt and grit will act like sandpaper and damage the carpet fibers. The damaged carpet fibers although they may be clean will not reflect light like an undamaged fiber. Because of this the areas with the damaged fibers can appear dull and dingy.
How often should I vacuum you ask? The correct answer is every day. While that is unrealistic for most people, at the bare minimum you should vacuum at least once a week. Try and hit the heavy traffic lanes more often. This will greatly help extend the life of your carpets. Vacuuming is not a race and you should go at a slow pace. Going too fast is the biggest mistake most people make. Vacuum North and South then East and West or diagonally. Yes, this takes time but the goal is to remove as much particulate as possible from your carpet. You would be surprised at how much I vacuum out of carpets right after the customer had just vacuumed.
I’m also asked many times what vacuum cleaner should I buy? My answer is always the best one you can afford. Even though there are some great vacuums in the $500 – $1,000 price range you don’t have to spend that much to get a quality vacuum. As a professional carpet cleaner my goal when I purchase a vacuum cleaner is to get one that will suck the most stuff out of the carpet. I don’t care about attachments or what else it will clean. I want it to remove stuff from carpets. You can contact us and we’ll give you a list of some great vacuums and they all cost less than $500. Some are even less than $200.
In summary, your carpets are one of the largest investments you have in your house. Take care of them and they will last you a long time. This includes vacuuming them often as well as having FASTDRY Carpet Cleaning professionally clean them every 6-12 months.
